I met up with the Bates family at Skyliner Lodge in Bend for a cozy little family session that felt very true to real life – slightly chaotic and cold and really sweet!

Their daughter, Winter, had just turned one, which is one of my favorite ages to photograph. Everything is new. Every stick, rock, and pinecone deserves a long, thoughtful inspection. She bounced between curiosity and snuggles and stole the show.

It was about 40 degrees and misting most of the time. Very Bend of us. But instead of fighting it, we leaned in. Lots of moving around, lots of cuddling close to stay warm, and lots of moments that felt natural and unforced. Some of my favorite photos happen in weather like this. When things do not go perfectly, people tend to relax and just be together, and that is where the good stuff lives.

We kept the session short and easy, which is usually all you need with little ones. What we captured feels like them. Playful, connected, and full of love. Watching Winter light up while playing with her parents was one of those quiet reminders of why I care so much about documenting families exactly as they are in this season.

This session is proof that you do not need ideal conditions or a long timeline for photos that matter. Just a willingness to show up, be close, and let things unfold.
