Bend travel guide: Planning your trip to Central Oregon

I’ve lived in Bend nearly 10 years and can say that everyone I know who has visited has brought up eventually wanting to move here, It’s just that good! Nestled at the base of the Cascade Mountains, Bend, Oregon, is truly such a gem of Central Oregon. Whether you’re looking to play outside or relax with your closest people, Bend has something for everyone. Known for its sunny weather and proximity to mountains, lakes, and rivers, it’s a destination many find themselves wanting to get married at. This travel guide will walk you through the best things to do while visiting Bend, whether you would like a resource to send to family and friends on your wedding website or thinking of your own pre-wedding plans!

Exploring the Outdoors

Hiking Trails

Tumalo Falls: One of the most popular hikes in town, Tumalo Falls offers breathtaking views of a towering 97-foot waterfall. The trail is family-friendly, with options to hike further upstream for a longer hike option.

Pilot Butte: For panoramic views of Bend and the surrounding mountains, the hike up Pilot Butte is a must. This moderate hike offers a 360-degree view at the summit, with vistas of the Cascades, Newberry Volcano, and the high desert.

Deschutes River Trail: A versatile and scenic trail, the Deschutes River Trail follows the river’s flow through forested areas and lava rock formations. There are various access points, making it an ideal option for casual option after a meal or those wanting a longer trek.

Water Adventures

Kayaking and Paddleboarding on the Deschutes River: Paddle through town while soaking up the mountain views, beautiful homes along the river and the old mill district. The gentle current makes it a great choice for beginners. I recommend starting in Drake park and paddling up to Millers landing and floating back.

Sparks Lake, Elk Lake, and Cultus Lake: These alpine lakes, located along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, offer stunning backdrops for kayaking, swimming, and fishing. Each lake has its own character, from Sparks Lake’s shallow waters and volcanic landscape to Elk Lake’s pristine, deep-blue waters. Sparks lake is also my favorite place to paddleboard or swim after a busy day!

Waterfall Chasing: Tumalo Falls and Sahalie Falls are must-visit spots for waterfall enthusiasts. Sahalie Falls offers a short walk from the parking lot (ADA accessible, too!) that rewards visitors with the most beautiful 73 feet waterfall and an option to hike a bit further to see Koosah Falls, while Tumalo Falls delivers incredible views of the 97 foot falls right from the trailhead.

Winter Activities

Skiing and Snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor: One of the largest ski resorts in the Pacific Northwest, Mt. Bachelor offers terrain for all abilities, along with incredible views of the surrounding Cascade peaks.

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing: If you prefer slower-paced winter activities, the miles of trails around Bend, including those at Wanoga Sno-Park and Swampy Lakes, provide really peaceful, snow-covered landscapes to explore.

Bend’s Craft Breweries and Dining Scene

Best Breweries to Visit

Bend is often called the “Beer Town USA” thanks to its booming craft beer scene. With more than 20 breweries in town, beer lovers have plenty of choices.

Deschutes Brewery: As one of the original pioneers of craft beer in Bend, Deschutes Brewery is a must-visit. Their flagship Black Butte Porter and fresh-hopped Mirror Pond Pale Ale are favorites, and the brewery offers a large taproom where you can pair your drink with some classic pub food.

Crux Fermentation Project: This popular brewery is known for its innovative brewing techniques and expansive outdoor seating area with gorgeous sunset views. Crux offers an impressive variety of beers, including the crowd-favorite Crux Pilz and the Double Cross IPA.

10 Barrel Brewing Co.: With its laid-back vibe and great selection of beer, 10 Barrel Brewing is another Bend staple. Try their classic Apocalypse IPA or sample seasonal brews on their rooftop deck, where you can enjoy the bustling atmosphere of downtown Bend. I also tend to recommend this spot if you have people in your group that dont love beer, as they also have some really good seltzers, cider and cocktails all made in house!

Where to Eat

The Lot and On Tap: Bend’s love for food trucks is evident in these popular food truck pods. The Lot, located near downtown, features a rotating selection of food trucks serving everything from tacos to Thai food. On Tap, on Bend’s east side, offers a similar setup with great outdoor seating and craft beer on tap.

Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails: Known for its contemporary take on Southern cuisine, Zydeco Kitchen focuses on fresh, organic ingredients sourced from local farms. Their shrimp and grits or Cajun fettuccine are standout dishes.

Jackson’s Corner: This cozy neighborhood spot is a local favorite, known for its wood-fired pizzas and delicious breakfast menu. Their commitment to using fresh, seasonal ingredients from regional farms makes it a great place for a true farm-to-table experience.
